Gender Inequality
Gender Inequality is a Global Inequality because women are not encouraged to take lead positions in society but to follow under male jobs for example, in K-12 education most likely the principal of a school will be male while the secretary will most always be a female. another example is in the medical field, doctors will mostly be expected to be males while when we think "nurse" automatically we assume the proffesion to be suited for females. Leon Guerrero's article about social problems and gender inequality states in page 46 that there is nothing automatic at birth that makes men become more suited for jobs of higher power such as senators and other male dominated proffesions. sociologists have examined how boys and girls are subject to the roles that they are thought of as suited for their gender. males are exposed to the masculine roles such as firefighters, attorneys, and politicians while females are encouraged to take on to more femenine roles such as service or helping proffesions in the education field such as nursing or teaching. women in the united states continue to dominate the female occupations as these quotes show, 96.3% of secretaries are female, receptionists are 93.2%, retistered nurses are 90.2%, these examples serve to show the difference between male and female and what we think of each gender as we preference one over the other. if we think back to our elementary education things have not changed much, i think that many of us can agree that most of our teachers were female while, as we grow we notice that more doctors are male which then shapes our view of what male and females roles in society should be and without question we put gender on proffesions that we have seen as we grow up and without question we accept it while not challenging the norms of gender inequality but justify it with " thats just the way it is" or "its always been that way".
